HEALING TOGETHER: Supporting a Loved One on Their Journey to Recovery
Healing Together is designed to help friends, families and loved ones look at the illness of Addiction, or Substance Use Disorder, through a lens of compassion and respect. This includes non-substance related ‘Process Addictions’ such as gambling, shopping, eating, social media, internet, pornography, sex, gaming, etc.
When we can better understand the factors that may have been in place which led to addiction, the tie-in to mental illness;
the inability to effectively cope with stressors, the damaging effects it has on the brain and how one thinks, reasons and interprets right and wrong, and the challenges a person experiencing addiction faces daily – we can begin to see the person behind the addiction, and help to support them in a more compassionate and caring manner.
“Healing Together: Supporting a Loved One on Their Journey to Recovery” is formatted as a two sessions, held a week apart, with follow-up support offered monthly.
The workshop will be offered every two months, and will be facilitated on the first and second Thursday evenings from
5:30 pm – 8:30 pm. The “Healing Together Support Group” will be facilitated on the fourth Thursday of every month.
- Day 1 “Understanding Addiction”, will cover the definition, risk factors, and understanding the effects to the brain and behaviours, of our loved ones.
- Day 2 “Communication Skills” will provide tips and techniques on how we can set reasonable boundaries and communicate with greater compassion.
- “Healing Together Support Group” will be a 2-hour meeting starting with a short presentation on some element of the workshop, followed by respectful and open discussion and sharing. It is not compulsory to attend the support group, it is offered to those who have taken the workshop who, at any time, feel they would benefit from the support of other people encountering similar situations.
